~ n informal a book, film etc about a murder case, in which you do not find out who did the murder until the end whoever pronoun 1 used to say that it does not matter who does something, is in a particular place etc  (I'll take whoever wants to go. | ...or whoever (=used to emphasize that you are talking about anyone and not about a specific person))  (You could ask Gary or Jane or whoever really.) 2 used to talk about a specific person or people  (Whoever is responsible for this will be punished.) 3 used at the beginning of a question to show surprise or anger  (Whoever would do a thing like that to an old woman?) 4 whoever she/he may be used to say that you do not know who someone is  (You've got a message from someone called Tony Gower, whoever he may be.)
